On the 14th October, Mark's first publication, Wilderness: The essence of a wild land, was formally released at the Lab-X Gallery in St Kilda with an accompanying photographic exhibition of Limited Edition Prints.

The 41 photographs on display featured wilderness images captured by Mark on scores of mainly solo forays into the wildest and most remote regions of Tasmania.

Early acclaim for

Wilderness: The essence of a wild land

"Given the numerous Titans who have gone before, it's a brave person who attempts to publish a book of Tasmanian wilderness photos. But Mark Humphries is young and fearless. Most importantly, he has 'delivered the goods' despite the formidable competition with which his work will inevitably be compared.

Humphries has chosen an unusual format. Wilderness is a slim (48-page), soft-cover book of about two thirds A4 size. The photos are excellent and supprisingly original. A few - such as the reflection of Frenchmans Cap, sunset on Mt Geryon and the Acropolis, and Mount Anne in the mist - are classics. The Australian printing does his work justice. There is an introductory essay on wilderness by well-known Tasmanian wilderness photographer Martin Hawes that provides some profound and moving insights.

Humphries writes that 'the sublime qualities of wilderness have the ability to awe and calm the soul'. His photos are ample evidence of that ability."

The ochre-orange sunset glow of Mt Geryon in a Labyrinth tarn, the blue and white intricacies of ice on the Central Plateau, (the National Gallery can keep Blue Poles!), the gentle walk of bark shedding eucalypts through a Tasmanian highlands mist are held, forever in this fine new photographer's grasp.

We too can linger and be entranced in moments we missed, but he rightly calls 'magical and mystical'. Add to that 'brilliant' . . .
