BOOK REVIEW
'Wilderness' communicates the awe-inspiring nature of one of the last
temperate regions of the world.
In his publication, Australian landscape photographer Mark Humphries
has captured the jagged terrain, and intricate details of Tasmania's
wild country. Setting the scene through literary prose, 'Wilderness'
places you in a remote, wintry corner of Australia's island state.
It forces you to experience first hand the drama, yet loneliness of
the landscape.
Complied in the throws of a wild blizzard, the images are interwoven
with Martin Hawes' writing. His heartfelt essay complements the images,
telling a story of fragile places.
'Wilderness' is broken into five sections: Water, Plantlife, Peaks
& Crags, Woodland and Shorelines. Each explores the wild land of Tasmania
through the camera lens. Mark's selection of subjects, composition
and manipulation of exposure, entice the viewer to feel the wild essence
within the images.
Essentially, the strength of 'Wilderness', lies in its eloquent design
and vivid colour reproduction. And is a visual depiction of one man's
solitary journey in a wild and unknown land. The impression of 'Wilderness'
supports Mark's account: "In all time, no single factor has enriched
and inspired the human spirit more than the pristine wilderness which
surrounds us".
With the global state of our natural environment, we should
all take heed from Mark's comments.
- HAMISH WALKER, Broadcast
Journalist (London, UK)
Early acclaim for 'Wilderness'
"Personally, I believe they are some of the best
photographs I've ever seen of Tasmania"
- DICK SMITH (Sydney, Australia)
"Given the numerous Titans who have gone before, it's
a brave person who attempts to publish a book of Tasmanian wilderness photos.
But Mark Humphries is young and fearless. Most importantly, he has 'delivered
the goods' despite the formidable competition with which his work will inevitably
be compared.
Humphries has chosen an unusual format. Wilderness is a slim (48-page),
soft-cover book of about two thirds A4 size. The photos are excellent and supprisingly
original. A few - such as the reflection of Frenchmans Cap, sunset on Mt Geryon and
the Acropolis, and Mount Anne in the mist - are classics. The Australian printing does
his work justice. There is an introductory essay on wilderness by well-known Tasmanian
wilderness photographer Martin Hawes that provides some profound and moving insights.
Humphries writes that 'the sublime qualities of wilderness have the ability to awe and calm the soul'.
His photos are ample evidence of that ability."
- CHRIS BAXTER, OAM (Wild Magazine)
"Mark Humphries' book "Wilderness - The essence of a wild land", jumped
out of my 'in' tray at the end of a long day in Hobart. It was a bundle
of delight.
The ochre-orange sunset glow of Mt Geryon in a Labyrinth tarn, the
blue and white intricacies of ice on the Central Plateau, (the National
Gallery can keep Blue Poles!), the gentle walk of bark shedding eucalypts
through a Tasmanian highlands mist are held, forever in this fine
new photographer's grasp.
We too can linger and be entranced in moments we missed, but he rightly
calls 'magical and mystical'. Add to that 'brilliant' . . .
This is good to hold. The 41 photographs are accompanied
by a vigorous short essay on wildness from Martin Hawes
- don't miss the mountaintop sojourn with the spine tailed swifts.
Mark Humphries has opened a new door on Tasmania's wild places - and
the light shines through superbly. His gallery of wild places will,
as he puts it, 'awe and calm the soul'. Should every day end so well."
- SENATOR BOB BROWN (Hobart, Australia)
"Bringing special places into the living rooms of those who cannot
experience them firsthand is vitally important. Without the stories,
illustrations and moving pictures of those who have a window on an
otherwise unknown world, it is difficult for us to understand what
we stand to loose. Wilderness - The essence of a wild land, is a terrific
contribution to a long tradition of helping to bridge that gap. Let's
hope it can be seen as an ongoing guidebook of what is there rather
than a documentary of what once was.
Well done Mark Humphries"
- RALPH ASHTON (World Wildlife Fund, Sydney,
Australia)
"Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary has asked me
to thank you for your book,
Wilderness - The essence of a wild land"
- PER THORNIT

"What a delightful surprise to receive your book.
Thankyou and congratulations"
- Dr DAVID SUZUKI (Vancouver, Canada)
"A fantastic piece of work capturing the
beauty of Tasmania"

** BOOK OF THE MONTH **
"Sometimes, inspiration finds us rather than the other way around.
I got home to find a solitary envelope in the mailbox, and sensing
it might be something interesting by the size and weight, (it wasn't
a bill, I knew that), opened it immediately. Inside was a copy of
a new book by Australian landscape photographer, Mark Humphries. Within
the first few pages, it became obvious that Mark and I drew our inspiration
from the same kinds of places, and that this was his attempt at enco-
uraging us to re-establish our connection with what makes us human;
our connectedness; to nature and to each other."
- WARREN MACDONALD
Inspirational Adventure Speaker
(Vancouver, Canada)
"A book! Holy cow! Congratulations! I've always admired the dedication
you've had for your landscape work, and the quality of your images
speaks volumes about your passion. It is wonderful to see all of your
best work collated together in this format. You must be stoked!"
- JESSE ANDREWARTHA (Los Angeles, USA)
"This guy is a natural with a camera"
- BRUCE NELSON (San Francisco, USA)
"Thank you so much for your book. It is AMAZING!"
